Do you know what they're for?

A Brush with Blush

Now, I'm not exactly a makeup expert. In fact, my entire cosmetics collection consists of foundation, blush and the occasional lipstick. So you'll probably not be surprised to learn that I look forward to makeup shopping about as much as I look forward to a trip to the dentist. The vast displays of tweezers, concealers, blushes and brushes overwhelm and intimidate me.

So it was with a degree of trepidation that I dragged myself to my local cosmetics counter to purchase some foundation. Well, I dibbed and I dabbed and after some deliberation, I picked the perfect foundation for my complexion. Just to be on the safe side, I picked up two compacts to ensure that a return trip wouldn't be required for a goodly amount of time. I’d apparently spent a small fortune, because the perky sales associate at the till informed me that I was entitled to a free gift (a regular $50 value, mind).Well I wasn't going to say “no”, so off she went to grab my freebie.

She returned with an elegant black tote, adorned with a shimmering black, jewel-encrusted bow.

"Wow!", I thought, "This ought to be good." She unfastened the tote’s clasp and, in a Vanna White way, slowly revealed an assortment of makeup brushes. In addition to the blush brush, which was the only one I recognized, there were four oddly shaped and sized applicators. There was a dual-headed comb-come-toothbrush (“Spike”, I’ll call him), a round-headed spongy applicator ("Sponge Bob") and two relatively small brushes (Meeney and Mo). Thoroughly perplexed, I tried to envision how I would use of each of my new acquisitions, but I drew a total blank.

Thoughts of “re-gifting” crossed my mind, as I stuffed the brush tote in the back of my bathroom drawer. There it remained until today, when my 20-year-old blush brush gave up the ghost. Reluctantly, I pulled the brush tote out of the drawer.

"What do people do with these things?" I thought. I turned the blush brush over in my hand and some silver text caught my eye: "Blusher", it screamed. Oh, sweet Jesus, thank you! They're labelled especially for the cosmetically challenged (like me).

It turns out that Spike is a "brow and lash comber", Sponge Bob is a "smudger" (whatever that’s supposed to mean), Meeney is an "eye shadow applicator" and Mo is a "lip concealer brush". Why anyone would want to conceal their lips is beyond me.

Now that the makeup mystery has been solved, do you suppose I'll be using my new-found makeup applicators anytime soon? Probably not, so if you feel like doing a spot of smudging or a bit of brow combing, drop me a line. I'd be more than happy to divest myself of these "tools".
