About Me

Hello!
Welcome to my blog ~ a place where I record my art, daydreams, inspirations, news of upcoming shows, peeks into my sketchbooks and bits of my everyday life. My name is Esther Parker and I'm an artist from Victoria, BC, Canada.

Why I Paint
People have always intrigued me. Their dreams, motivations and behavior are fascinating. Art became a way for me to understand others when, in my late teens and questioning whether I could really draw or paint, I picked up a camera. I was immediately drawn to black and white portraits and documentary photography. I came to idolize photographers such as Imogen Cunningham, Mary Ellen Mark, Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange and Margaret Bourke-White. Their images resonated with me and inspired me in my own photographic journey.

A few years ago, no longer able to ignore my desire to paint, I enrolled at the Vancouver Island School of Art. Now, figurative painting and portraiture are my primary means of expression, but photography continues to influence my work. Photographs are frequently at the heart of my paintings which are often monochromatic and reference my photographic roots.
